Breast implant removal surgery is a procedure aimed at removing breast implants from a previous breast augmentation surgery. Often, patients opt for this surgery along with a breast lift to enhance the appearance of any loose skin.

Who is Breast Implant Removal Surgery For?

Some women choose to undergo breast implant removal surgery for personal reasons, such as dissatisfaction with the size or shape of their implants. Factors like weight fluctuations or pregnancies may also lead to a desire for implant removal.

Additionally, breast implant removal surgery may be necessary due to complications such as:

Infection or bleeding Necrosis (development of dead tissues around the implant) Capsular contracture Implant rupture, folding, or deflation Silicone leakage (especially with PIP implants) Implant displacement Breast implant illness (BII) For those with PIP implants, it’s crucial to undergo an MRI or ultrasound scan to check for ruptures. If a rupture is detected, prompt removal of the implant is recommended.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Breast implant removal surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take one to three hours. After implant removal, some patients may opt for breast implant replacement. If implants are not replaced, a breast lift may be performed to address stretched skin. Most patients can return home the same day, with incisions often made in the same location as the initial implant surgery. For those with capsular contracture, hardened capsules may be removed to aid in healing.

Recovery After Surgery

Recovery time varies, but most women can return to work within five days with minimal discomfort. If removal is due to capsular contracture, recovery may be longer and more uncomfortable. Scars typically heal well over three to four months but may never completely disappear. It’s essential to follow post-surgery instructions, including wearing compression garments, avoiding strenuous activities, and taking prescribed pain medication.

Risks and Complications

Potential risks and complications of breast implant removal surgery include temporary sensitivity or numbness in the breast area, as well as breast sagging or deformities. These risks should be discussed with your surgeon before undergoing the procedure.
